First attempt: don’t bother with the tape, hold the ends in place with fingers stretched along the pencil, put messy loose curls in the cord. Second attempt: taped the ends tight, and success. Great trick!

    Yes, the tape is important to get tight bunches of coils. Also, I found that it helps to let the coil cool an extra minute or so before removing the cord. This helps the cord retain tighter coils.

So cool – I’ve been walking around the house with a hair dryer seeking out cords to coil.
