Speech to text is one of my favorite Android functions. Check out everything you can do. But something that frustrated me early was the fact that the microphone button was missing in the newest Google Keyboard update.

Don’t worry though, the button’s just hidden — off by default — and it’s easy to enable the microphone button.

Enable voice input

You’ll enable voice input in the keyboard settings.

First, long-press on the backslash (/) button to bring up the gears key.

You’ll now see an option to select Google Keyboard Settings.

From the keyboard settings menu make sure that the box next to Voice input key is checked.

The easier method

Now that you struggled through that mess, there’s actually an easier alternative.

Select Settings > Language & input > check the box next to Google voice typing from the menu.
