During undergrad I took an astronomy course. The class satisfied a science requirement; that meant I could skip chemistry and physics. Truthfully though, I’ve always been fascinated by the stars. I remember a friend in the 4th grade who attended Space Camp, which created some fanatical jealousy inside me.
Well, fast forward 15 years, include the advent of powerful handheld computers, three dimensional imaging, our solar system, some ingenious app designers, and you have Solar System 3D (free).
This is a fun and fascinating look at our solar system, and it’s guaranteed to give you a few minutes of enjoyment.
One of the coolest features is the ability to “fly” around the sun, planets, and moons in our solar system. The video does a good job of showcasing the feature.
The app has great graphics that make the process of flying through the solar system pretty realistic.
Visiting planets also gets you a great popup of information about the planet or moon.
The controls are easy to use, which means it only took me 10 minutes to figure out (that’s a joke).
Tap and flick to zoom, scroll, and rotate.
Of course, you’re not going to spend hours (but you may) using this app, though Solar System 3D is a great way to blow a few minutes, check out some planets, and be truly amazed.
Now, if we could just get a Street View camera up on planets for shots like these:
