The Google elves are working hard to provide some Google Play Store gifts that are worthwhile. Some of the gifts are great, while others lacked luster.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

In the case of the How the Grinch Stole Christmas offering, I found a hit. This “surprise” is a well-designed app of the beloved book. Our family connected the HDMI to the tablet and allowed the app to read the book to us. The kids loved following along in our physical copy of the story, and the effects in the app. The narration is a bit annoying, considering that we’re all fond of Bela Lugosi’s classic version, but the rendition works.

The app features touchable pages that present specific words and move as the text appears.

For $0.99, this app is a great purchase. The whole family will love this digitized version.

Since nothing beats the original version, here’s a snippet of “You’re a Mean One, Mister Grinch“:

You can pick up the new version with Jim Carrey on Google Play or Amazon Instant Video, or grab the original version sung by Thurl Ravenscroft on Amazon MP3. You can pick up the original version on Amazon Instant Video, too.

Merry Christmas!
